Experience the beauty of Kyoto's historic Yamashina Canal during cherry blossom viewings.
The Yamashina Canal is in a serene locality adjoining a park where locals enjoy a morning run or an evening walk. It is an ideal place to appreciate the beauty of nature, especially during the cherry blossom and autumn season.
Heian period waterway
Kyoto boasts a vibrant history; from ancient temples to traditional gardens, there's something to discover at every turn. One of its most fascinating landmarks is the Yamashina Canal, which dates back to the Heian period. This incredible feat of engineering is part of the Lake Biwa Canal, which spans an impressive 20 km and carries water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto.
Yamashina Canal is a key part of the First Canal, stretching 4 km from the exit of the First Tunnel to Hinooka. Alongside the canal runs a picturesque promenade, allowing visitors to explore various fascinating sites, including canal facilities, shrines, and temples. It's no wonder the promenade has become one of the top tourist destinations in the Yamashina District.
The artificial waterway was finished during the Meiji period and is essential to Kyoto's infrastructure. It forms a significant part of Japan's past massive projects. Why not take a relaxing walk along the path and soak up the beauty of the cherry blossoms while learning about its fascinating history?
Make Yamashina Canal Cherry Blossom Your Next Plan
In springtime, the cherry blossoms create a magical atmosphere. You can take a leisurely stroll along the canal or go on the Lake Biwa Canal cruise tour, which passes by the famous Anshu Bridge. As you sit on the boat, passing by the towering Sakura trees that bow down to greet you, you can't help but feel inspired by the beauty that surrounds you.
This bridge becomes a beacon of attraction for the locals, drawing families with kids and kindergarten school kids with its enchanting cherry blossoms and canola blossoms, which the locals treasure like precious gems. It is breathtakingly beautiful, not just in spring but also in autumn.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for full bloom is slightly different each year due to the weather. However, the best time to enjoy cherry blossoms at their best at Yamashina Canal is around the last week of March to the beginning of April.
The pictures I shared here were taken on the 25th~27th of March.
How to Get There
It's not far from Kyoto station and so convenient to visit.

To reach the Yamashina Canal, you can use either the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line or the Tozai Line.
If you are near Kyoto station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo line to Yamashina station. On the other hand, if you are from Karasuma area, use the Tozai Line (Biwako-Hamaotsu) and get off at Keihan-Yamashina station.
The Yamashina Canal is located within a 10 to 15-minute walking distance from the station.
