Study in Kyoto to experience a city where ancient culture meets modern education in perfect harmony.
Before I applied to graduate school in Japan, I was unsure whether to study in Kyoto or Tokyo. Ultimately, I decided to go for an English program at a university in Kyoto, and honestly, it was the best choice I've ever made!
Let me share why you absolutely need to study in Kyoto at least once in your life.
Top reasons to study in Kyoto as an international student
Kyoto gives you such a cool study vibe, mixing top-notch academics with amazing culture and breathtaking scenery. With its rich history and distinct lifestyle, the cozy atmosphere and wonderful environment make studying here ideal, enhancing your focus on skill development.
Let’s jump right into what makes it special before going to study in Kyoto!
Reason 1: Many Universities and Japanese Language Schools
Looking for the best universities to study in Kyoto for international students? Kyoto has some well-known public and private universities.
Kyoto University is among the top 5 in Japan and ranks 50th globally. Then you’ve got private schools like Ritsumeikan University and Doshisha University that offer programs in English, making it easy to connect with friends from all over the world.
If you're thinking about studying Japanese in Kyoto, there are quite a few awesome language schools that not only teach you the language but also offer fun cultural activities. This is a great way to meet locals and pick up the language even quicker!
Reason 2: It was Japan's Capital City for Over 1,000 Years
Kyoto was originally known as Heian-kyō (平安京), which translates to "Capital of Peace and Tranquility." It served as the capital of Japan for over a thousand years. The city is home to numerous historical sites and was the residence of the Emperor from 794 until 1868.
If you plan to study in Kyoto, you can immerse yourself in history and a one-of-a-kind learning environment.
Reason 3: It's Japan's Cultural Hub
When you think of Japan, you probably picture a lady in a flowing kimono with traditional hairstyles and that classic white makeup.
Kyoto is a place for Geisha, talented female performers skilled in traditional Japanese arts. If you stroll through the quieter streets, you might catch them hopping out of a taxi on their way to entertain at a luxury restaurant. You really can't find anything quite like it anywhere else unless you study in Kyoto.
But that's not all there is to see! Kyoto's packed with cool stuff like Gion Matsuri, Kabuki theater, kimono-making, matcha origin, and the calming Zen practices at ancient temples.
Because of its rich culture and history, a big part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs has moved from Tokyo to Kyoto, making it a key player in supporting the arts and culture scene.
Reason 4: It has Tons of Natural Beauty
Kyoto is nestled among mountains, and there's a color and height limit for buildings, which keeps everything looking nice and blends with the natural scenery. Because of this, you get to enjoy the open sky without skyscrapers blocking the view, giving the city a laid-back vibe.
After spending two years living and studying there, I can honestly say it's a great place for anyone who's into their education. When studying gets overwhelming, it's so easy to chill by the quiet Kamo River or hang out at the Delta of Demachi.
Kyoto is beautiful and has a nostalgic vibe no matter the season, but autumn is definitely the highlight. While the media makes it seem like tourists are everywhere, trust me, there are tons of spots to quietly study in Kyoto. This city is where you can chill out with a book and soak in nature.
Reason 5: It's Relatively Affordable
How much does it cost to study in Kyoto? Is the cost of living in Kyoto different from Tokyo?
Another advantage is that the cost of living for students in Kyoto is lower than in Tokyo. While the price of meals and entertainment can vary from person to person, fixed costs like rent are pretty reasonable.
You can find an apartment in a nice and safe spot starting from around 30,000 Yen. I used to live alone in the Kita Ward area as a female student, and my rent was just 24,000 a month, including the water bill. It was in a chill neighborhood where I could easily walk to the university, a big supermarket, banks, the train station, and a bus stop.
Reason 6: It's a Safe City
Japan ranks as one of the top 15 safest countries according to the Global Peace Index (GPI). Still, some streets in big cities like Osaka and Tokyo can feel a bit sketchy.
Kyoto is a completely safe and peaceful city with a respectful environment. The crime rate in Kyoto is very low, and streets or small alleys are well-lit. You can walk around anywhere without any worries.
